Ever since I was a toddler, I’ve been absolutely fascinated with the ocean. Specifically, I love tidepools. Growing up in Manitoba, coming out to the island for family vacations was always such a treat. I would track low tide times with my dad and spend hours overturning rocks, searching for little crabs, starfish, or whatever small creature I had yet to discover. When I was nine, I decided I wanted to become a marine biologist. Fast forward to high school, that dream faded as I realized I needed to have high marks in math, chemistry, and physics in order to be accepted into a marine biology program – I’ve always excelled more in the arts than sciences and math. I was okay with that, as I began to explore other life passions.

Since I was in high school, every time I’ve visited the island the first thing I want to do is visit the ocean and explore tide pools. Now that I’m living here, I’ve been biking to Cattle Point often during low tide. I started keeping a notebook to jot down what I see, and bought a species identification book. I want to understand more about tides and the different types creatures that live in the intertidal zone, why they thrive, and how they interact with one another. I plan on seeking out a few podcasts, videos, blogs, social media accounts, and interactive sites that I can use for my marine biology inquiry. I’m excited to adventure to Cattle Point and report back some of my findings using this blog and other aspects of technology.
